General Info

Tucked away in the quiet charm of Freudental, Restaurant Am Birkenwald feels like the kind of place you stumble upon once-and then keep coming back to. The location itself is peaceful, surrounded by greenery, making it a perfect escape for a relaxed meal.

From the moment you step in, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. This Swabian restaurant leans into tradition, and you can see it reflected clearly across the menu. The dishes are straightforward, hearty, and satisfying-exactly what you’d expect from authentic regional cuisine. A simple Beilagensalat is often the starting point, fresh and crisp, setting the tone for what’s to come.

One dish that truly stands out is the Schweinefiletmedaillons in Cognacsosse mit Bratkartoffeln. The pork is tender, the cognac sauce rich but balanced, and the crispy fried potatoes tie everything together beautifully. On another visit, the Wiener Schnitzel mit Pommes und Salat delivered that classic comfort-golden, crunchy on the outside, and juicy inside, paired with fries that hit just the right note.

For those looking to try something more traditional, the Saure Kutteln mit Bratkartoffeln offers a bold, authentic Swabian flavor. It’s not a dish you find everywhere, and here it’s done with confidence. To finish, the Crème Brûlée is a must. The caramelized top cracks perfectly, revealing a creamy, smooth dessert underneath.

Beyond the food, the services here make the experience even more enjoyable. The outdoor seating area is especially pleasant during warmer days, offering a calm spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family. There’s also delivery available, which is convenient if you want to enjoy the menu at home. The presence of alcohol and coffee options rounds out the dining experience nicely, while a dedicated kids' menu makes it family-friendly.

Reviews from visitors often highlight the consistency and the relaxed vibe. It’s not about being flashy-it’s about good food, reliable service, and a comfortable setting. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual lunch or a longer dinner, this restaurant manages to feel both local and welcoming at the same time.

The overall experience at this location is easy to appreciate. It’s the kind of place where the menu, the service, and the setting all work together naturally, creating something that feels genuine rather than forced.

What customers say?

“ First, a tip right from the start: Make sure you make a reservation! The restaurant quickly filled up during our visit, and we were very glad we had made a reservation. We also quickly learned why it's so popular. After placing our order, we received a welcome from the kitchen. Delicious bread with olive oil and salt. Very simple, but absolutely delicious! The beef broth with Maultaschen (ravioli) filling was also completely convincing. The highlights, however, were the two main courses. The pork medallions with fried potatoes were simply divine, and the cognac cream sauce was amazing. It's a good thing the plate was well-filled, because we couldn't get enough :) My wife had cheese spaetzle, and that was also delicious! Unfortunately, the portion was much too large; it would have certainly fed two people. But for a cheese spaetzle fan with a ravenous appetite, it's just the place! This restaurant is an absolute insider tip! The restaurant looks rather inconspicuous from the outside, but we can only recommend that anyone who loves good food stop by! ”

“ We went on Schnitzel Day. The restaurant had advertised its beautiful Christmas decorations, and I was expecting fairy lights and such at the entrance, but there was nothing. Because of the explicit advertising and the rather meager decorations, I'm deducting one star. The food, on the other hand, would easily get six stars or more; the sauce was delicious! The service was okay, and the staff was very friendly. So yes, I'd gladly come again. ”

“ We ate here after making a reservation. According to the confirmation, we had a table for two hours, which thankfully wasn't the case. It took an hour for our food to arrive (all good if it's freshly prepared, but then dessert becomes practically impossible to eat in that timeframe). Unfortunately, it was only okay. Considering the website advertised plenty of sauce, I, as a Swabian, felt it was rather meager. I specifically asked them to leave out the mushrooms when I ordered. Unfortunately, they must have overlooked this, and they were sent back uneaten. What a waste! When we were cleared, my husband mentioned it. The waitress replied that she had noted it down. Another response: "I don't care where the mistake happened, and I can hardly speak to the chef myself." In my case, thankfully, it was just the product that ended up in the trash and not an allergy or anything like that. The restaurant itself was very cold, even though we were sitting right next to the radiator (which was cold). ”

“ This place is a true hidden gem. Excellent food. The roast beef and Schnitzel were delectable! Some of the best we’ve had. The service was superb. Extremely friendly staff. The homemade herb infused oil as an appetiser was delicious. We’ll definitely be back, especially for schnitzel Mondays. Thanks ”

“ Anyone who enjoys Swabian cuisine should definitely stop here. Probably the best roast beef with onions I've had this year. The homemade spaetzle is also outstanding. Make a reservation! ”

“ I always go there on Boxing Day and am always pleasantly surprised by the delicious food! You can taste that it's homemade, the atmosphere is great, and the service is very friendly :) ”

“ We hadn't known about the restaurant by the birch forest before. We chose it on a Sunday evening in early April based on the menu. And we'll definitely be back! We were glad we'd made a reservation, as the restaurant was quite busy. The food was absolutely delicious – we had the bread dumplings with mushrooms and the roast beef with onions and spaetzle. We especially loved the spaetzle and the sauces! The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, and we felt very comfortable. ”
